Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday turned down an honorary doctorate being conferred upon him by the UP Technical University. Citing an existing Honoris Causa for his reason to refuse another, Akhilesh thanked UPTU for proposing his name but said he would be unable to accept it. The technical university had planned to confer the degree on Akhilesh during its annual convocation ceremony on January 12.
Earlier, in a barely publicized event at Akhilesh’s official residence, the CM was conferred the Honoris Causa by the Swami Rambhadracharya Handicapped University of Chitrakoot. To confer the honorary doctorate on Akhilesh, chancellor of the university, Swami Rambhadracharya had met Athe CM at his official residence.
On Monday, Akhilesh’s refusal was communicated though an official statement by the state government in which Akhilesh was quoted as saying it would be incorrect to accept another honorary doctorate when he already had one.
UPTU officials said Akhilesh’s role in eradicating corruption from the university has been unprecedented; one of the reasons for the university to confer an honorary doctorate upon him. “Instead of succumbing under pressure, the chief minister took a tough stand against former registrar, US Tomer, ordering his dismissal,” officials said. Tomer was accused of irregularities in the affiliation process for the academic sessions of 2013-14 and 2014-15.
