Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas, jumped the north fence line of the perimeter around 7:20 p.m. local time, Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary told the Times.
Gonzalez was able to make it through the doors of the North Portico, where he was apprehended, Leary said.
The White House was partially evacuated and put on lockdown after Gonzalez jumped in the fence, according to White House reporters on social media.
Gonzalez was placed under arrest and the lockdown lifted, Leary said.
The incident within the complex occurred shortly after President Barack Obama and his daughters departed for the weekend.
Video showed the intruder running across the White House lawn toward the president’s residence.
